Pantry Pests

Mealworms, saw-toothed grain beetles, drug store beetles, cigarette beetles, bean weevils, confused flour beetles, and Indian meal moths are all types of insects commonly found in homes. These pests feed on various food items such as cereal, flour, corn starch, dry pet food, pepper, spices, nuts, dried fruit, and grits, as well as other household items like dried flower arrangements and plant-based stuffing in furniture and toys.

To control these pests, it is important to remove and discard any infested food spillage, such as flour, corn starch, nuts, grits, dry pet foods, and cereals, from cupboards and pantries. Thoroughly clean these areas, removing any food debris, before restocking. When bringing home dry foods and feeds from the market, it is advisable to freeze them for a week or heat them in an oven at 130° to 150°F for 30 minutes to eliminate any potential pests. Using the preheat setting on a microwave oven for 45 to 60 seconds can also be effective. Afterward, store these foods in tightly sealed containers that are resistant to insects.
