Spiders
In Oklahoma, the Black Widow, Brown Widow, and Brown Recluse spiders are known for having bites that can be particularly dangerous. However, it's important to note that even bites from other common spiders, which are far less venomous, can still have an impact on small children and individuals who are hypersensitive. These bites may cause skin redness and swelling. While spiders are mostly beneficial as they prey on pest insects, it's crucial not to indiscriminately kill non-dangerous spiders, as they serve as a food source for various birds, reptiles, arthropods, and mammals.
Please keep in mind that controlling Brown Recluse (also known as 'fiddleback') spiders can be challenging, and they often multiply rapidly, especially in unoccupied homes and buildings. For severe infestations of this spider, it is advisable for homeowners to consider hiring a professional pest control company to effectively treat the infested areas, particularly in spaces like attics, garages, crawl spaces, closets, storage areas, and living spaces.
To minimize the presence of spiders, it is recommended to remove debris and clean up cluttered areas both inside and outside the home. Pay extra attention to attics, basements, and closets during the cleaning process. Brown recluse spiders tend to hide under and behind baseboards, as well as in other concealed spots. Treating cracks, crevices, baseboards, moldings, and potential hiding areas with appropriate methods and products is essential. Additionally, using flat mouse sticky boards placed strategically in room corners and under dressers can successfully capture and eliminate many spiders. Applying insecticide treatments, such as sprays and dusts, to the exterior foundation wall perimeter and lawn can deter spiders from entering the home.
